Lorraine Fitzsimons graduated from UCD in 2002 with an honours degree in Civil Engineering and in 2004 with a Masters of Engineering Science Degree in Materials Science specialising in using recycled materials in asphalt pavements. She worked in the areas of transport and development planning and traffic engineering with Cunnane Stratton Reynolds and Faber Maunsell (AECOM) before taking up the position of Sport for Young People Executive in the Irish Sports Council in October 2006. She is a former director of Community Games and is a Master Tutor for the Irish Sports Council. Lorraine returned to academia in January 2009 to undertake a PhD on how the built environment affects people’s physical activity levels and carbon footprint combining her three areas of interest.
