A native of Northern Ireland. Educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland (1979 - 1986); HND and BSc (2.1 hons) in Applied Biology from University of Ulster at Jordanstown (1988 and 1990 resp.); HDipEd (1 hons) from Trinity College, Dublin; MA in Education specialising in Science Education (1994), Technology Education (1995), and Mathematics Education (1996) from the Open University; PhD in Education from Trinity College, Dublin (2008). General interests in Byzantine Iconography (as a 'writer' of icons), theology & spirituality, the Greek language. Botany: herbarium studies and fieldwork; Mediterranean Flora.
